Austrian Peaks & Swiss AlpsTour Overview Primarily suited to experienced riders, this tour is sure to give you the thrill and enjoyment of mountain passes and stunning panoramic views. Due to the nature of the tour there are a couple of longer days involved, however we have allowed for four free days giving you the opportunity to relax, unwind and explore. You may even wish to join us on a ride out – the choice is entirely yours. We shall use the picturesque Kaunertal Valley as our first base, nestled in the heart of the Tyrolian Mountains. One of the highlights in this area is the Kaunertal glacier road starting from Feichten snaking up to the Weissseeferner Glacier. At 2750m above sea level the views are truly breath taking.
After three nights we shall board the bikes, and start our journey into Switzerland. Our route will take us over some of the finest and seemingly endless passes. Our next base for a further three nights will be the mountain village of Grindelwald in the Jungfrau region of the Bernese Oberland which is one of the most spectacularly beautiful regions of Switzerland. From here you will see the majesty of the Eiger, capped mountain peaks, jagged rocks and lush rolling green hills.
Tour Format:
Day One:
We shall depart from Dover with a lunch time crossing on the ferry, this will give approx an hour or so to freshen up and relax after your journey to the port. No need to panic today as it is an easy day and the ride to our first nights stopover will be approx 2 hours from Calais. We aim to be at our hotel in Belgium for no later than 6pm where we can eat, have a drink and generally get to know each other.
Day Two:
Our aim today is to make good progress mainly using the faster motorways and toll roads as we have some ground to cover. However its well worth the effort as our next stop is on the doorstep of the Black Forest and the infamous B500, and tomorrow… We get to ride it! Our next hotel is surrounded by German vineyards and views across the neighbouring Alsace region, you will find the fresh air will provide you with that feel good factor. A very pleasant family run hotel with great food in a fantastic location.
Day Three:
Suitably refreshed after breakfast and a good night’s sleep, we are going to make our way to our first base in Austria. However before we get there we have some fantastic roads ahead of us. Our journey starts with the B500, described as Germany’s most scenic road, we shall follow this route through the Black forest, around Lake Constance where we shall stop for lunch before we enter Austria, we will then go cross country to our biker friendly hotel in the wonderful Kaunertal Valley
Day Four & Day Five:
Free days without any formality, simply choose to relax in the surroundings of our typical alpine lodge, visit nature with a long walk, or you can choose to ride out with us. Our location puts us within easy reach of the Stelvio Pass, up to Stilfserjoch once voted by Top Gear as the best road in Europe. Or if you prefer to take a ride on your own take the Kaunertal glacier road to visit the Weissseeferner Glacier.
Day Six:
We must leave this lovely part of the world now, however the holiday is far from over as we make our way to Switzerland. Today we ride some of our favourite passes such as the Fluella, Gimsel and Furka Pass, with these behind us we will soon have the beautiful mountain village of Grindelwald in our midst which sits in harmony as the gate way to the very famous Mount Eiger, where we shall stay for the next three nights.
Day Seven & Eight
Two full days off here to get out and about, whilst here we definitely recommend you visit Jungfrau, it truly is a memorable experience. Take the train to Kleine Sheidegg and then the old rail track which winds round and up through the mountain. Interlaken is also a short train ride away and well worth a visit, take a boat trip on the lakes of Interlaken, the Thunersee and Brienzersee.
We have actually known some people to go and do some paragliding…. alternatively take the cable car ride to the Schiltorn with its revolving restaurant the Piz Gloria which was famously used in the James Bond film "On her majestys secret service". Whenever I leave Grindelwald, It leaves me with a sense of calm and peace. I hope this place will have the same impression on you as it does me.
Day Nine:
We are now nearing the end of our time together and must leave Grindelwald behind us as we make our way to France for our next stop. Today’s ride will be a mix of some national road and motorways. As with the other days, we will ensure plenty of rest breaks and a leisurely lunch before getting to our last hotel. Although we won’t be spending anytime here on this trip it is worth a bookmark for another visit. It has lots of history and has been in existence since the roman era.
Day Ten:
Time to say our goodbyes, exchange phone numbers and e-mail address's as we head for the port to catch a mid afternoon ferry.
